Providing your therapist is adequately trained, qualified and registered, choosing a therapist is about finding someone who you feel comfortable with and who can help you make progress in a way that feels right for you and it's okay to speak with different therapists before finding the best match.
These terms are often used interchangeably but there are differences between
these terms:
Counselling: Typically shorter-term and focused on specific issues, such as
stress, relationship problems, career challenges, or grief.
Psychotherapy: More in-depth and long-term, addressing deep-rooted
emotional difficulties, patterns of behaviour.
We will explore what has brought you to therapy, what your present struggles and difficulties are. This is really about you tell me your story. I will listen and pay close attention, perhaps seeking clarification to deepen my understanding. Your needs and goals will be identified incorporating where you see yourself in the future and potential obstacles that are preventing you from achieving this. A therapeutic plan will then be collaboratively made together.
This is something we will explore in our first session but it really depends on the issues you have brought to therapy and the goals you are working towards. In all cases, I suggest a review after around 6 sessions to see how you are finding therapy. Throughout the process I encourage an open and continual dialogue in which we can explore your goals and progress.
Starting therapy can feel like a big step—and it’s completely normal to feel unsure or even a little nervous. This is a space where you don’t have to worry about saying the “right” thing. Instead, it’s about understanding yourself better and working through whatever you might be struggling with at your own pace.
In our sessions, we’ll explore your experiences, thoughts, and feelings together. Whether you're looking to understand yourself more deeply, find ways to cope with difficult emotions, or make changes in your life, we’ll work side by side to help you get there.
